Although 90 per cent of Brazil is within the tropics, more than 60 per cent of the population lives in areas where altitude, sea winds, or polar fronts moderate the temperature. There are five climatic regions in Brazil: equatorial, tropical, semi-arid, highland tropical and subtropical. Plateau cities such as São Paulo, Brasília and Belo Horizonte have milder climates averaging 19°C (66°F). Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Natal and Salvador on the coast have warmer climates balanced by the Trade Winds. Rio, for example, has an average temperature of around 26°C (80°F) which will climb into the high 30- 40 grades Celsius (over 100°F) during the summer months.

Carnival In Rio What to See & Do
Carnival happens from Saturday through Tuesday. We suggest arriving a few days earlier. There's so much to do and see during Carnival that you will not have much time left to explore the city. Try to plan your Carnival activities ahead to sample the variety. Include in your must-do's the Samba school parade, carnival street bands, and carnaval balls.
The whole summer in Rio is Carnival season. To avoid the higher prices charged by hotels during the main event, you could arrive one or two weeks ahead. Banda de Ipanema opens Carnival street festivities generally on January. On the following weekend, also in Ipanema, there's Banda Simpatia é Quase Amor on Saturday.
On Sunday it's Monobloco, starting in Leblon, and going all the way to Posto 10 at Ipanema Beach.
Rio Samba School rehearsals are also a great pre-Carnival idea. They happen every weekend at the samba courts, known as quadras de samba. These venues are in distant areas that are tricky to get to. Go with a group in a package including a local escort, and round-trip transportation. Once you're inside, it's very safe. Samba school percussion bands or baterias sometimes play live at popular South Side dance clubs and venues. The Samba School Parade of the Grupo Especial happens on Carnivall Sunday and Monday. The show starts at 9 p.m. and ends on the next day near 4:00 am.
We suggest trying to book your tickets ahead, as seats at the Sambodromo (Sambodrome) are quite limited.
